With his big crash in FP2 in Mexico, George Russell caused extensive damage. Toto Wolff alerted to the fact that Mercedes are now in serious trouble when it comes to the cost cap. However, on Saturday, the Briton will participate in the third free practice session. Mercedes worked hard overnight to ensure the repairs were made.

Mercedes confirmed an hour before the start of free practice that mechanics were forced to work through the evening. As a result, the team had to break the so-called curfew. This does not result in a penalty because Mercedes has only broken the curfew for a second time this season. Teams are allowed to work longer hours a maximum of twice per season.

The chassis of car Russell is unsalvageable

During the work, good and bad news came to light. First, the good news: the gearbox and engine were not damaged in the huge crash. Therefore, they can be used again.

There was less good news about the car's chassis. It was damaged to the extent that it had to be replaced. Russell will, therefore, drive FP3 with a new chassis.
