Qualifying disaster for Oscar Piastri as McLaren driver fails to escape Q1

Qualifying disaster for Piastri who fails to escape Q1 in Mexico

Oscar Piastri has been knocked out of qualifying in Q1. The McLaren driver made a mistake in his penultimate lap and simply wasn't fast enough in his final run. The Australian will be joined by Red Bull's Perez at the back of the grid.

Piastri will start from 17th on the grid. The McLaren struggled to perform on the track. He completed his first run on medium tyres and had a lock up. McLaren put him on the soft tyres but then he ran wide at turn 12. His lap time was deleted. Piastri stayed out for another lap and improved but other drivers did a better job and he dropped back down.

It's a big points loss for McLaren, who are battling against Red Bull in the Constructors' Championship. However, there is less damage done because he is joined by Perez at the back.
