What happened during qualifying in Mexico?

Ferrari continued where they left off in Mexico City. After Carlos Sainz had previously topped the second free practice session when the Pirelli tyre test took place, the Spaniard confidently topped qualifying as well. The Ferrari driver was the only one to complete a lap around the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez quicker than a minute and sixteen seconds. Charles Leclerc has said that he himself struggled a little bit, but he still finished inside the top four on Saturday.

Max Verstappen could once again manage to finish ahead of Lando Norris, and therefore can line up alongside Carlos Sainz on the first row. Norris finished in P3, 0.089 seconds behind his title rival. With the long straight leading up to Turn 1, it is anyone's game to take the lead into Turn 1, with even the two Mercedes cars starting from P5 and P6 having a shot at gaining important position early on.

On the other hand, it was a disappointing Saturday for the home favourite Sergio Perez. The Mexican did not even make it through to Q2 and finished in P18. Oscar Piastri also got eliminated early on in qualifying, as the Australian finished just one place ahead of Perez, in P17.
