McLaren threatened by Ferrari? 'Very credible contender'
As the two Ferraris have qualified in the top four for the Mexico Grand Prix, Lando Norris will have to face them alone as his teammate Oscar Piastri exited in Q1 on Saturday. With a heap of points potentially on the table for Ferrari, questions about McLaren's confidence in maintining their lead in the Constructors Championship have been raised to Team Principal Andrea Stella.
The McLaren Team Principal explained how he has been noticed Ferrari's improvement across a variety of tracks and that this performance is not only recent. Speaking to the media on Saturday he said, "And for us it has been clear for a long time that Ferrari is a very credible contender for the championship. This has been clear potentially even more after the upgrade they took to Italy in Monza. And if you look at Baku, I think they had the quickest car."
He is therefore not surprised by the Italian team rising up in the Constructor Standings. "Looking at the outright pace I think Ferrari recently have been the most competitive car, so no surprise that they are in the quest for the championship."
McLaren not focusing on its rivals
Stella insists that McLaren are unbothered by their rivals and that the team is focused on its own progress. "Our focus is on ourselves and obviously monitoring all our competitors but for us we don't have any sort of particular interest in considering Red Bull or Mercedes or Ferrari. For us they are all the same."
McLaren currently lead the Constructors Championship with a total of 544 points. Red Bull are 40 points behind in second, while Ferrari are close in third place sitting only eight points behind the Austrian team.
