Ecclestone criticises FIA's "crazy" actions: 'Not racing anymore'
- Jeroen Immink
Former Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone has spoken out about the FIA's actions. The Brit believes the racing body went too far with their penalties on Max Verstappen during the Mexican Grand Prix.
What does Ecclestone think about the FIA?
Ecclestone - 94 and living in Brazil - returned to Interlagos last weekend for the F1 race. There, the Brit commented that the FIA is sometimes too harsh with their penalties. "It gets too crazy! We could sum up the current rules in one sentence: 'Don't fight, otherwise you'll get into trouble'," Ecclestone told RTBF.
"We saw it in Mexico with the two 10-second penalties imposed on Max. Penalty for that, what are you going to do if something more serious happens? How many seconds do you give in this case? I think we have exceeded the limit at this level. It's not really racing anymore," the 94-year-old added.
Ecclestone led Formula 1 for more than 40 years. After Liberty Media took over the top class of motorsport, he was removed from his position. According to Ecclestone, a lot has changed since then, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. "It's like everywhere in the world everything is constantly changing. I'm not saying the current leaders are doing a bad job, they just haven't looked at it closely enough. Things that need to be abolished and changed," he concluded.
