How did Ferrari miss out on developing the SF-24 due not taking a risk
Frederic Vasseur, Ferrari's team principal has eplxained that his team lost out on precious time when creating updates for the SF-24 during this season. The Italians did not make the right choice in terms of their approach to flexible front wings, the team principal admitted.
Why did Ferrari decide not to deliver a flexiwing?
Ferrari wanted to develop a flexible front wing for their car, the SF-24, but the Italians doubted whether it would be approved by the FIA. These wings currently used by their rivals McLaren and Mercedes, bring an advantage: there is less oversteer at high-speed, and less understeer at low-speed corners.
"There was frustration because at one stage we were waiting for the decision of the FIA when they installed the cameras. We were convinced that it will go for the ‘no go’. And it went for the 'go'! So probably we lost one or two months," Vasseur explained what made Ferrari lose time compared to their rivals to Motorsport.com.
Vasseur also explained why Ferrari decided to not take a risk with the development. The reason is the cost cap. "It's difficult because with the cost cap you have to make your choices. It means that if you are convinced that it won't be allowed, and you have start to develop something, then it's costing you a time in the wind tunnel. But it was our decision," the Frenchman concluded.
