Perez still holding on to Red Bull contract: 'They know I can do it'
Sergio Perez insisted on serving his contract out ahead of the Abu Dhabi GP. Rumours keep on occurring as the season goes on about the Mexican's departure, but the driver is sure: he will continue with the team. The driver however talked about his performance, and explained he is responsible for Red Bull not being in the fight for the constructors' title.
Perez underlined in Abu Dhabi where things stand on his side regarding driving for Red Bull the following season. "Nothing has changed since before in terms of what I've said for the entire year. I got a contract for next year and I will be driving for Red Bull next year," he told GPblog among others.
Despite the challenging season for the Mexican, he still knows that he is capable of performing for the Austrians. "I think it's just important to stay in it together because the season hasn't been the greatest, but at the end of the day, there's a reason why they renewed me. And they know that I still can do it. And that's an important factor."
Perez 'takes responsibility' for Red Bull not fighting for constructors' title
Entering the final weekend, McLaren and Ferrari are fighting for the constructors' title, while Red Bull are no longer in the picture. "Of course, I take responsibility. But also, I don't feel it's fully all down to one person. I'm obviously part of a big organisation, a big team, and it's very unfortunate that we did not fight any harder for the constructors'," Perez explained.
According to the Mexican however, he still believes he should be in F1, and wants to spend his final years with his current team. "It's hard to say at the moment. I still feel like I have a few years in me, in the sport at this level. I'm sure I want to finish with Red Bull," Perez concluded.
