Hamilton suffers early elimination from qualifying after bizarre incident
Lewis Hamilton has been eliminated from the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix qualifying session in Q1 after a bizarre incident. The Brit got to the line by the skin of his teeth, but a bollard stuck underneath his car confirmed his elimination from the session. He finished his final qualifying with Mercedes in 18th place.
Disappointment for Hamilton and Mercedes:
Lewis Hamilton will sit out the remainder of qualifying after a bollard was dislodged by Kevin Magnussen's Haas car. The Dane was trying to get out of the way, running over a bollard in the process. It ended up underneath Hamilton's W15 and destroyed his lap. "Messed that up, big-time guys. That was bad man, Jesus," Hamilton said on his radio after the incident. Mercedes sent Hamilton out rather late in the session, meaning that he got to the line with just a few seconds of the session to spare.
Wolff responded on team radio, stating: "Yeah, f*ck, Lewis, that was bad." It is not the way Hamilton or Mercedes want to finish their 12-year stint together. The Brit will be driving for Ferrari from 2025.
