Toto Wolff on Lewis Hamilton final GP Abu Dhabi Mercedes good luck

Will Wolff support Hamilton next year at Ferrari: Only if 'that' happens

One one Grand Prix is left in the 2024 Formula One season. This also marks the end of the Lewis Hamilton era at Mercedes, as the British driver will join Ferrari next season. Team principal Toto Wolff hopes for one great comeback for the seven-time world champion.

After spending more than a decade at Mercedes, Hamilton will now compete for the German team one last time. After an unlucky result in Qualifying, the Briton will start from P16 on the grid.

Toto Wolff takes full credit for that aforementioned starting position. "From the sporting side, he was super quick and we got it wrong in qualifying, we should have sent him out earlier and then the bollard. He was third quickest in FP3. In terms of the emotional side, we had a Thursday evening team farewell in paddock club. It was only us and high emotions. It's still being compartmentalised but in two hours it's going to be hard," he told Sky Sports leading up to the Abu Dhabi GP.

The Austrian hopes there is still one good result left for Hamilton in a Mercedes car. "I would love [if he could come through the pack]. That is why I was so emotional yesterday because I really wanted to give him a goodbye on the podium, really push hard and overtake. If the car is quick in the race, he's going to go for it."

Wolff to support Hamilton next year?

In 2025, Hamilton will start his next chapter in Formula One at Ferrari after competing for Mercedes from 2013 until this season. Wolff underlined that he hopes Hamilton will succeed on one condition. "I said to him that if we can't win, we will cheer for him." The German team will begin next season with the duo of George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli.
