Official: Red Bull and Perez announce parting ways for 2025
It is official: Sergio Perez will no longer drive for Red Bull Racing in the 2025 Formula 1 season, Max Verstappen will have another teammate next year.
Perez leaving Red Bull, Verstappen gets new teammate
Following the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, it was announced that Perez was in negotiations with Red Bull to terminate their working relationship. Despite the Mexican driver's contract for next year with an option for 2025, after a tough season for Perez, both he and Red Bull have decided to part ways with emmediate effect.
Perez joined Red Bull in 2021 as Alexander Albon's replacement. In his first F1 season with the Austrian team, he proved to be far from Verstappen's pace both in qualifying and in the races, however he held up Lewis Hamilton in Abu Dhabi playing a fundamental role in Verstappen's first world title. In 2022 Perez helped Red Bull win the constructors' title alongside Verstappen.
In 2024, however, althought he had a good start with several podium finishes, which earned him an early contract extension, he fell off the pace as the RB20 became harder to drive, leading to a collapse in his performances. The Mexican did not get beyond eighth place among drivers and Red Bull was overtaken by McLaren and Ferrari among constructors.
Perez has driven a total of 90 races for Red Bull, in which he managed to reach the podium 29 times. The Mexican has won five races and his best finish in the drivers' standings is second place in 2023.
