Crucial year for Russell: under pressure from Antonelli and Verstappen

4 January at 12:00

George Russell faces an important year in his career. The Briton has an expiring contract and has to start leading Mercedes for the first time that very year. A lot of pressure on Russell's shoulders, while his team boss is openly flirting with Max Verstappen.

In Abu Dhabi, George Russell finally stood his ground after being accused of dishonesty by Max Verstappen in Qatar. Verstappen had criticised Russell's behaviour in the stewards’ room, calling it disgraceful. Known for his typically diplomatic and polished demeanour, Russell used his press opportunity in Abu Dhabi to respond in kind.

Opinions remain divided about Russell’s role in the stewards’ room incident, but one conclusion was clear across the paddock: Russell is finally showing some character. For years, he was the perfect professional—the "PowerPoint presentation" kind of driver—never one to spark headlines with bold remarks. But this time, Russell surprised everyone.

Why Russell Needs to Show Character in 2025

Russell will need to carry this newfound tenacity onto the track in 2025. With Lewis Hamilton departing Mercedes, Russell loses a formidable teammate. At first glance, this might seem like a win for Russell, but in reality, it’s anything but. Over the past three years, Hamilton bore the brunt of the pressure. That mantle now shifts firmly to Russell.

The Pressure from Verstappen

For the past three seasons, Russell was the young up-and-comer, tasked mainly with keeping up with a seven-time world champion. He did well, even outperforming Hamilton in 2024. But as the 2025 F1 season begins, Russell will be 27 years old and entering his seventh year in the sport. Now, as the team’s senior driver, he must lead Mercedes while being scrutinised like never before.

Adding to the challenge is the arrival of Andrea Kimi Antonelli, the latest Mercedes prodigy. At just 18 years old, Antonelli is already being hailed as the team’s future star. For Russell, there’s only one way to secure his status: he must dominate his younger teammate in both qualifying and races. Anything less, and team boss Toto Wolff may hesitate to extend Russell’s contract. If Antonelli comes close to matching Russell’s performance in his rookie season, doubts about Russell’s capabilities will grow quickly.

Verstappen’s Shadow Looms Over Russell

There’s another factor weighing on Russell, one he has little control over: Toto Wolff’s public admiration for Max Verstappen. Wolff has spent the past year openly courting Verstappen, and with the new regulations set for 2026, that season presents the perfect opportunity for a major team switch.

Should Wolff succeed in convincing Verstappen to join Mercedes, Russell’s position would be in jeopardy. As Wolff himself admitted: "Everyone in the paddock would want Max in their car."

For George Russell, 2025 is not just about outperforming his teammate—it’s about proving he is indispensable to Mercedes, both now and in the future.
