F1 legend on Alonso's third world title: "Hope he can get it"
Fernando Alonso has endured his toughest season in F1 since his comeback in 2021. Despite the great promise shown in the first third of 2023, the team's performance took a nose dive which they were unable to stop in 2024 despite their efforts. However, the Spaniard is pipped by former F1 driver and motorsport legend, Jacky Ickx, to win the so far, elusive third world championship and disregards age as an obstacle to Alonso's ultimate goal.
Why does Ickx still has faith in Alonso?
Speaking to mundodeportivo, the former Ferrari driver was quick to praise Alonso's dedication to motorsport, whilst also issuing a stern warning regarding the missed opportunities. "The years that have passed do not come back and he was champion in 2005 and 2006," before adding that he "hopes" the Spaniard can win his third world championship.
Regarding the promise shown by Aston Martin and Alonso in 2023, Ickx said the following. "Last year with Aston Martin he was doing very well (2023) and we all thought he could be there," before concluding that "the world of F1 is very difficult," something Ickx himself is familiar with, having finished as runner up to Sir Jackie Stewart in 1969 and Jochen Rindt, the only posthumous champion in the category's history, in 1970.
Is Alonso too old to become champion in F1 again?
Ickx does not believe that the Spaniard's age will have a negative impact on his title chances yet. "His longevity alone is proof that he is very special," said the Belgian, before praising Alonso for his qualities, particularly his passion. "Also for his human and driving quality. He is a whole. I like him. I have met him several times. He also did very well in Endurance (WEC), and also when he was in the Dakar. I think passion is priceless and he is still passionate about motorsport."
Alonso's 2024 season was one to forget quickly, however 2025 could present him with a chance to win races again. Adrian Newey is set to start working at Aston Martin as Managing Technical Partner in March this year. Ahead of the 1997 F1 season, the British designer made the jump from Williams to McLaren. Although the MP4/12 proved to be unfit to win, thanks to Newey's input the team managed to secure two wins in the latter part of the season, which they closed on a high with a 1-2 finish at the European Grand Prix. Will he and Aston Martin be able to repeat that feat in 2025?
