Villeneuve thinks Hamilton’s F1 longevity has a benchmark, and it's Alonso

Villeneuve thinks Hamilton should be more like Alonso

Lewis Hamilton is set to make his Ferrari debut this year when the season kicks off in Australia come March. Although his contract is believed to run until 2027, former F1 World Champion, Canadian Jacques Villeneuve, seems to think the Briton’s F1 career’s longevity is a matter of ‘head and desire.’

Hamilton's benchmark should be Alonso

Speaking to The Action Network, Villeneuve boils down Hamilton’s length of his probable final stint in F1, driving for Ferrari, to whether or not the Briton can match Fernando Alonso on this aspect: ''It depends if Lewis Hamilton has the same hunger as Fernando Alonso or not. He still wants one championship, and he wants it with Ferrari. So that should be enough to give him the hunger. But if the going gets tough, will he just think, will I be [a] fighter and warrior like Alonso or will he think, ‘it’s time do something else with my life?’''

The Canadian is also certain that Hamilton has not yet reached a physical limit, claiming he could 'go on for another 10 years.' However, he does point out the importance of the mental side of things, an aspect of Hamilton’s that has been brought into question when the Briton drives cars that are not capable of winning.

'You should stop F1 when it gets boring'

''At some point in your life, maybe it loses its importance or its priority. And that's when you go down," adds the Canadian. ''It is draining [F1] but at the same time it's what keeps you alive. It's what drives you. And you realize when you [should] stop it. You realise two months into it, ‘Gosh, this is boring.'''

To better illustrate his point, the former F1 champion takes one of Hamilton's fiercest rivals as an example. ''Take Nico Rosberg, he was happier not racing. That's just not the same level of passion,'' concluded Villeneuve.
