Paul Monaghan, chief engineer at Red Bull Racing, would love to see a title battle between Fernando Alonso and Max Verstappen. According to Monaghan, such a scenario would be fantastic for Formula 1, though both teams would need to work hard as the two drivers would "not allow each other half a millimetre" on the track.

Monaghan: 'A battle between Verstappen and Alonso would be great'

Monaghan has had the privilege of working with multiple world champions throughout his long F1 career. He started as an engineer for Fernando Alonso during the Spaniard's first two seasons at Renault, before moving to Red Bull in 2005.

There is a lot of mutual respect between Verstappen and Alonso, who get along very well. However, they have never driven winning cars simultaneously and have not yet directly competed against each other for wins and championships. Monaghan would like to see that change.

"We will have to build a lot of cars because they will not give each other half a millimetre of space," Monaghan told DAZN Spain. "They would be fast, fair and ruthless. I can imagine it would be quite busy on the radio. There would be enough respect between the two though, that's a no-brainer. Honestly, if Fernando can fight Max at this stage of his career, hats off to him. It would be great to see."
