Herbert looks ahead to new year as steward: 'That will be the big difference'
- Ludo van Denderen
Johnny Herbert will also be active as a steward in Formula 1 in 2025, GPblog reported on Thursday afternoon. As early as the first Grand Prix of the season in Australia, the former F1 driver will take a seat in the jury room, judging whether Max Verstappen and his colleagues are playing by the rules. Looking ahead to the new season, the Briton realises there is going to be a big change.
Herbert says he is looking forward to the new Formula 1 season, which starts in Melbourne in mid-March. Preparing for specific situations the former driver does not do, as preparing for them is impossible, since "It all happens in the moment," he states in conversation with Casinoutanspelpaus.io. "There are still going to be incidents, there are still going to be complaints from teams and drivers and we’re going to have to deal with that as normal."
Herbert happy with better rules
The regulations for 2025 have clarified what drivers can and cannot do during overtaking attempts in corners. According to Herbert, it is a good thing that clarity has been created after a season full of fuss about who does or does not have the apex, and who was guilty for the collisions.
"I know George Russell mentioned that, it was crazy, this apex stuff and now we’ve given space on the exits. We never did that in karting, that was never part of it. And I never accepted this giving space."
Herbert favours drivers diving into gaps. "You have to take that space, that space is for you so you take it and if the other driver is not quite there then he backs out, that’s racing. It’s not a rule that says ‘Oh no, you can’t do that’, you’ve got to earn it. The difference we have from last year to this year with the racing is the racing rules," Herbert said.
