Brundle points to Verstappen over FIA penalties: 'Drivers are role models'
The FIA's new penalty system, which allows stewards to severely punish Formula 1 drivers for misbehaviour, has raised a lot of controversy. Martin Brundle, former F1 driver and now commentator at Sky Sports, is fine with this introduction and explains his thoughts on the matter.
Brundle thinks FIA penalties are fine and points to Verstappen
"We’re role models. F1 drivers are role models. You don’t need to gratuitously swear in a press conference," Brundle told Sky Sports, giving his reaction to the FIA's rule change. "In the heat of the moment, in the car, full of adrenaline, full of despair, happiness, whatever, I get it."
As an example, he points to another sport, where he claims that there is more respect for referees. "What I love about rugby is how they respect the referee and I think Formula 1 should be the same because you’re role models for all the drivers coming through," he explains.
"So if you’re dirty on track or you’re cheating the track limits or you’re calling the FIA stewards ‘stupid idiots’, to give you one example" Here, Brundle is referring to a remark made by Verstappen in Abu Dhabi about the stewards.
"Being unreasonable like that, I think there are degrees of this and how heavy-handed you want to be is a whole new story. But I don’t mind there being some rules of are Formula 1 drivers, who are great kids, being role models. No, I’m calm with that."
