The Mercedes-Benz W196 R Stromlinienwagen is set to be auctioned this weekend and is currently valued at $52,6 million dollars by RM Sotheby's. Should it be sold for even half of that, it would still set the record as the most expensive F1 car ever to be sold at an auction.

However, this feat should come as no surprise to Mercedes, who already hold the record having sold their 1954 contender, Mercedes W196R, the Stromlinienwagen's predecessor, for the whopping price of $24,35m in 2013.

The Mercedes-Benz W196 R Stromlinienwagen was debuted mid season and was driven by F1 legend Juan Manuel Fangio to a Grand Prix win in 1955 at his home race in Buenos Aires aiding the Argentinian to win his third F1 title. It later also succeeded in snatching the fastest lap at Monza later that same year at the hands of yet another F1 icon, Sir Stirling Moss. In fact, the W196 R Stromlinienwagen will be auctioned in its Monza livery, the car's final race before Mercedes retired it.

These are the five most expensive F1 cars ever to be auctioned

1. 1954 Mercedes W196R ($24,35m in 2013)

2. 2001 Ferrari F2001 ($6,83m in 2017)

3. 2002 Ferrari F2002 ($6,21m in 2019)

4. 2010 McLaren MP4-25A ($5,96m in 2021)

5. 1993 McLaren MP4/8A ($4,47m in 2018)
