Hamilton champion with Ferrari in 2025? ‘I can only be moderately optimistic’
Lewis Hamilton and Enzo Ferrari’s son, Piero, have often spoken for the better part of a decade. A joke here and there, but a Ferrari drive for the Briton was always in the air according to the Italian. That the move is becoming a reality when Hamilton’s 40 years old, Piero agrees that it may be a little late, however, the Italian, dares to be "moderately optimistic" looking ahead to 2025, what he claims will be a 'spectacular season.'
Piero Ferrari does not hide the long history Ferrari and Hamilton have shared. "The first time he came to us when he bought LaFerrari, it was 2014," states the Italian to Autosprint. After that a relationship was formed between the two with the possibility of the Briton racing for Ferrari always lingering in the air.
"Over the years we have talked and joked, here and there. He has expressed to me several times his desire to race with us." But alas, it was never the right time… Until last year that is. "He was tied to Mercedes and we were tied to our drivers. Then the moment came when both Lewis and we saw the opening to start negotiations. And the signature arrived."
Is Hamilton's enthusiasm at Ferrari a sign of things to come?
That the move is materialising just now, when Hamilton is in the final stint of his F1 driving career does not escape Piero, who despite agreeing the move came a little late, disregards the champion’s age as a factor. "I don't think age is a problem at all. He accepted the challenge with enormous enthusiasm, so is he sure of his possibilities?" Wonders the Italian aloud.
"From how we ended 2024, well, I can only be moderately optimistic. 2025 will be a beautiful and spectacular season, because we are on the last page of a regulation that is closing and everyone will be at peak performance," concludes Ferrari.
