Mazepin re-brands himself as a 'hybrid athlete' with extraordinary plan
Famed Formula 1 flop Nikita Mazepin is looking to compete in sports outside of racing. The former Haas driver has labelled himself as a 'hybrid athlete' as he makes the next step in his topsy-turvy career. This may include a switch to the sport of boxing.
The Russian spent just one season in Formula 1 in 2021, alongside Mick Schumacher at the lowly Haas team. Neither pair scored a point, but Schumacher managed to impress some with his performances. Mazepin, on the other hand, became a laughing stock after several poor performances.
After Russia invaded Ukraine in early 2022, Mazepin's contract was terminated. Title sponsor Uralkali was owned by his father Dmitry. That contract was also terminated as both were sanctioned by the EU over their family ties to Vladimir Putin.
Mazepin has since participated in the Asian Le Mans series in the LMP2 category with his own team, 99 Racing. Notably, he finished third in class at the Four Hours of Dubai alongside Neel Jani and Goncalo Gomes in the team's first start. He has also competed in off-road races in Russia, as he is still unable to take part in many motorsport competitions due to the travel ban.
Mazepin's knockout plans explained
Speaking to Russian news agency Taas, Mazepin said: "This year, I plan to participate in five competitions in different sports," he began. "The boxing match will take place in the fall of 2025, and I hope everything will go well." The Russian has yet to highlight an opponent but seems to already be training for a boxing bout on his Instagram.
