Helmut Marko reveals why he continues to work for Red Bull
- Kimberley Hoefnagel
Helmut Marko might be 81, but he still moves through the Formula 1 paddock with remarkable energy. Many wonder why he hasn’t retired yet. The reason? Max Verstappen and the memory of former Red Bull boss Dietrich Mateschitz keep him motivated.
Marko has worked as a consultant at Red Bull Racing for many years and is therefore inextricably linked to the team. “I’m still doing this job for two reasons: one of them is Max, and the other is to protect the spirit of Red Bull and Dietrich Mateschitz within the team," Marko told Formula 1 Magazine. "Or at least I try, because there’s nobody who could really replace Mateschitz," he adds.
Mateschitz, one of Red Bull's founders, shared a close bond with Marko. His passing in October 2022 sent shockwaves through the Formula 1 paddock. Since then, Red Bull has undergone significant changes, leading to tensions within the team over the years.
Marko on close relationship with Verstappen
Marko continued, highlighting Max Verstappen as one of his key motivations: "In terms of Max, he’s a great talent and a special human. He’s everything Red Bull represents. The boss would always say: we don’t buy stars, we make stars. Max is the perfect example of this: direct, accessible and a great sportsman. It’s wonderful to work with someone like that. I’ve never felt this connected to a driver. Although I was also really close with Seb." Marko concluded.
