Critics beware: 'Cadillac is going to achieve its lofty goals'
- Ludo van Denderen
With the appointment of Peter Crolla as the new team manager, Cadillac has taken another important step towards a successful entry into Formula 1. Out of the spotlight from the cameras, the Americans are currently working hard to build up a the team, all with one goal: to be highly successful in F1. And that will certainly succeed, is Mario Andretti's conviction.
Mario Andretti, the chairman of the board of directors of the newly-formed F1 team, previously made no bones about it in conversation with GPblog: Cadillac wants to win races and championships. The American former F1 world champion even tells Auto, Motor und Sport he is convinced it will succeed.
"Formula 1 should expect full commitment from a giant like General Motors," Andretti states. "They are very proud. Look at how they have grown in GT racing and sports cars and how successful they are there. They are not half-hearted. They are ambitious and have huge goals. I am confident they can achieve them."
Andretti adds another 'child' to his large family
The now 84-year-old Andretti notices the enthusiasm about Cadillac worldwide. Everywhere the American goes, he is approached about the new team. "The project feels a bit like my baby," he tells German medium.
But what Andretti certainly does not want is to be involved with the team on a daily basis. "I don't want to be a team owner. I am a driver. After my career, I had many offers to join a team. I always said 'no'."
"I just want to have a place to go in the paddock, where I can hang out," Andretti said.
