Why the partnership between Zhou and Ferrari is and also is not remarkable

On Wednesday, it was announced that after weeks of denial by Ferrari, Guanyu Zhou will become the Italian team's reserve driver.. An equally logical and remarkable partnership for a driver who failed to make a smashing impression in recent seasons at Sauber.

Was it just a lack of realism or simply hope? Zhou himself long insisted that a contract extension at Sauber was a possibility, while the Swiss - now acquired by Audi - had long moved on. Other teams had already filled their line-ups for 2025, and for the remaining open spots, the Chinese driver was not an option. For that, he had not managed to impress enough with the - it has to be said - mediocre Sauber.

Only towards the end of last season did Zhou say he could possibly see himself as a reserve driver, on the condition - and this is good to remember - that he would get a permanent seat in the team entering 2026. However, it is not expected that the suave Zhou will replace Lewis Hamilton or Charles Leclerc in 2026.

Do Cadillac play a role?

So why did Zhou choose this option? Perhaps it has to do with Cadillac joining Formula 1 in a year's time. The American team is set to use Ferrari engines and gearboxes for the first few years, so there are clear links between the two teams.

There may even be tentative agreements that Zhou will become the experienced driver the American team are looking for - alongside the projected rookie Colton Herta. Don't forget that Graeme Lowdon is the Americans' team principal. Indeed, until recently, he was Zhou's manager. The experience Zhou is now gaining at Ferrari could be extremely useful for Cadillac.

From Ferrari's point of view, the having Zhou as reserve driver also makes sense. The Chinese driver competed in 68 Grands Prix, so he has the necessary experience if he suddenly has to fill in. Moreover, he also worked with Ferrari power units at Sauber in recent years, which must make the adjustment easier.
