The loud boos echoing through London’s O2 Arena on Tuesday night weren’t aimed at a foreign rival but at Christian Horner himself—despite being an Englishman. As he took to the stage to speak, a significant portion of the crowd made their disapproval loudly known. Was it simply because he leads the team of Max Verstappen, the long-time adversary of British favourites like Lewis Hamilton, or did the controversy involving a female Red Bull Racing employee contribute to the hostile reception?
It has now been a year since Horner was accused by a former assistant of inappropriate behaviour. Despite two internal investigations—that have been questioned in some circles—Horner was ultimately cleared of any wrongdoing.
Is the Horner case still on the mind at Red Bull?
Whether this definitively closes the case remains to be seen. A possible lawsuit remains a potential option if the woman in question wants to seek justice from an independent judge. Reports suggest that the Red Bull employee - who is currently sitting at home on continued pay - is still toying with that thought.
Helmut Marko, Red Bull Racing's long-time advisor and team member, was asked by Austrian outlet OE24 whether the controversy surrounding Horner had truly come to an end. The Austrian's response wasn't exactly 'yes'. He said: "Let's please let that rest and concentrate on the fifth world title [for Max Verstappen]."
