Aston Martin sees areas for improvement after test: 'But progress has been made there'

- Ludo van Denderen
Suddenly he was there again. Fernando Alonso had already changed clothes, until it turned out that teammate Lance Stroll was too ill after all to complete the afternoon session of the final day of testing in Bahrain for Aston Martin. An hour before the end, the Spaniard sent his green car back onto the track, but was unable to set the timing sheets a-blaze.
Even on the third day of testing, Aston Martin was in the rear of the field in terms of best times driven. No doubt, none of that matters to team boss Andy Cowell. Above all, he looked at the process the ambitious team has embarked on. "Our first few days working with the AMR25 have been busy and productive," said the Briton.
"The focus has been on learning about this car, the new aero package, checking all the systems, and gathering data from a huge number of experiments and test items. There has been a massive effort from the team on the ground in Bahrain and back at base [in Silverstone] to run the car and crunch all the data which is already helping us paint a picture of where we are."
Aston Martin thinks it is too early to judge
In any case, Aston Martin seems to have made significant strides compared to last season, Cowell argues. "Initial feedback from Lance and Fernando suggests we have made progress with the drivability of the car, but we have also discovered areas that could be better and need more focus."
" It is very early days to be making any judgements on how much progress we have made during the winter and how we compare to our competition. We have been focused on ourselves; we have just kept our heads down to get the data and information we need before the racing begins in a couple of weeks’ time," Cowell concluded.
