FIA hints via social media at sweeping announcement for 2026

FIA hint at sweeping announcement for 2026 on social media

The FIA have dropped a big hint about an upcoming announcement regarding the 2026 Formula 1 season on social media. Indeed, it seems that the FIA are foreshadowing the official announcement of Cadillac as the 11th team on the F1 grid.

Today, the FIA have posted a picture of the 2014 Spanish GP on X. The caption prompts the fans the question: "How many cars can you count?", together with an emoji of curious looking eyes. The hashtags then read: #FIA and #F126.

In the 2014 season, 22 cars were on the grid, before Catherham folded by the end of the year. And possibly, 22 cars could mean one thing: the 11th team can soon be officially announced. Namely, that would be Cadillac.

Resistance from F1 teams

The announcement itself would be just a formality about Cadillac joining, and the team are already working on getting prepared for the 2026 season, and also have Ferrari as power unit suppliers.

It was a rocky road until the American team could join. After first under the name Andretti they met the requirements of the FIA in 2023, FOM (Formula One Management) rejected their bid for 2025 and 2026 following talks with the already-present 10 constructors.

However, in November 2024, it was revealed that FOM changed their mind, and decided to move forward with the application, under the name Cadillac. The team will also develop their own power units, but not immediately.

"With Formula 1’s continued growth plans in the US, we have always believed that welcoming an impressive US brand like GM/Cadillac to the grid and GM as a future power unit supplier could bring additional value and interest to the sport. We credit the leadership of General Motors and their partners with significant progress in their readiness to enter Formula 1. We are excited to move forward with the application process for the GM/Cadillac team to enter the Championship in 2026," Liberty Media CEO Greg Maffei said at the time.
