The second race of the 2025 Formula One season will surely be an exciting one as it has been revealed that the Shanghai International Circuit has undergone some major changes.

After the Australian Grand Prix presented the drivers with particularly challenging conditions due to the weather, the second race of the season will present them with another set of challenges.

In the FIA's official preview ahead of the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai this weekend, it has been revealed that the track has been fully resurfaced.

A resurfaced track means that it is smoother, and it will therefore have a big impact on the tyres and their grip on the surface. As the teams do not know exactly how the tyres will perform on this new surface, it will likely have a big impact on race strategy as well.

Extra challenges for the first sprint race

To add to the difficulty, this race falls on a sprint weekend so the drivers will only have one practice session on Friday before competing in Sprint Qualifying that afternoon. With this limited one hour of practice time, the drivers will have to adapt to the new track surface quickly in order to find the ideal setup.

With challenging wet conditions last week in the race in Australia and only one practice session this weekend, the six rookies in particular will have to adapt quickly to the challenges.
