Piastri 'struggled' despite claiming first-ever pole position in Shanghai
Oscar Piastri has managed to defeat Lando Norris and Max Verstappen, and got McLaren back to winning ways in qualifying at the Chinese Grand Prix. This was the Australian's first ever pole position as well.
Both of Piastri's laps In Q3 would have been enough for P1 in today's second session, after both Lando Norris and Max Verstappen failed to improve on their second flying laps. "It didn't feel like it. I found a lot of pace in Q3. Q1 and Q2 I was genuinely struggling and the car came alive, I came alive in Q3. The laps were a little bit scruffy but I'm just pumped to be on pole," he began after jumping out of his car.
Piastri looks ahead to Sunday
After finishing second in the Sprint, Piastri will line up in first place on Sunday. Last time in Australia, the Grand Prix did not finish so well for the McLaren driver, as he was caught out by the wet conditions in the penultimate two corners.
Looking ahead to the Chinese Grand Prix, he said: "I want to make sure I keep the clean air. I was pretty happy after the Sprint. We did the most we could. I would have been happier with one spot higher, but with how the race turned out I couldn't have asked for much more."
"I feel like we learned a lot and I'm looking forward to putting that into use tomorrow," Piastri concluded.
