Back in 2024, Oscar Piastri tweeted at the Chinese Grand Prix that he was 1/16th Chinese, thus making it a "home race" for the Australian (only 1/16th of a home race). Since then, fans have kept the jokes going, and after taking pole position in the qualifying session, Piastri was asked about his remarks.

Firstly, he wanted to clarify his statement. He said, "The 1/16th heritage wasn't a joke, that's real".

Piastri jokes about Chinese Heritage, and his fans

He jokes about the fans at the Chinese Grand Prix: "They're all here for me, not for Lewis, for me."

Regarding his heritage, he admitted, "Yeah, I mean, it's many generations ago, and I definitely can't speak Chinese, and I'm not going to embarrass myself."

But he has been able to spend more time in China this year. "I think I've definitely enjoyed coming here a lot more this year. I've been able to see a little bit more of Shanghai. The weather's been much nicer than it was last year. Everything is just going a bit better this weekend than it was 12 months ago."

"The pole position is a really good confidence boost. It's also my first one, so it's always nice to kind of tick that box in a sense.  It's been a good start to the whole year for both the team and myself. Even if the points tally doesn't look like that at the moment. So, I'm happy with how things are going, and this is a nice step along the way. "

Can Piastri make up for how the Australian Grand Prix ended here at his other "home race"?
