Spa win gives Fernando Alonso "great optimism for Indy" and triple crown
Fernando Alonso won the six hours of Spa-Francorchamps on Saturday as he prepares to clinch triple crown with Indy500 win later this month.
Alonso says the win in tricky conditions has lifted his optimism as preparations ramp up for the Indy 500.
"Now I am with great optimism for Indy because the results I have make me have a smile, although aware that the race will not be easy, maybe it is the most difficult to achieve the Triple Crown, but let's fight and see what we can do," Alonso told the writers of the newspaper AS.
It's no surprise that the two-time Formula 1 world champion is high on confidence. The win in Belgium maintained Alonso's 100% win rate during 2019. The result leaves him needing just a few points during from Le Mans to clinch his third FIA title.
"At the moment it is a perfect 2019. I won in Daytona, in Sebring (1,000 miles) and today I won in Spa," Alonso added.
"It's probably been my craziest race. I had never driven in snow. The race was neutralized with the safety car and ended with the red flag at the end. They were extreme conditions for everyone and personally I am very happy for the points we add for the championship today."
