McLaren only realised their true potential in France
Carlos Sainz believes McLaren are starting to understand their Barcelona package better, revealing the team had to wait until France for real results due to the lack of quick corners at the Monaco and Canadian Grand Prix.
Following their upgrade at the Spanish Grand Prix, McLaren achieved only one finish in the points in the next two races, Carlos Sainz's P6 in Monaco, before failing to score in Canada. However, they have started to pull away in the battle for fourth place following two very impressive performances in France and Austria, where both drivers secured points finishes at both races.
Sainz is currently leading the way for the Woking based team but even he revealed it took until the French Grand Prix for the team to realise the true potential of their package.
"We understand the package from Barcelona step by step better and enrich it now with smaller changes," Sainz said as quoted by Auto Motor und Sport.
"It has greatly improved the car, especially in fast and mid-paced turns. The stern sticks now, you can rely on it.
"But we only found out in France because there are no fast corners in Monte Carlo and Montreal."
