Wolff: Hamilton "needs to be admired" for pushing through illness
Initially, Toto Wolff wasn't pleased with his Formula 1 drivers after a disastrous German Grand Prix for Mercedes. But 24 hours on and Wolff has praised Lewis Hamilton and says the F1 world championship leader should be "admired" for pushing through his illness.
Ahead of Saturday's qualifying, Mercedes were ready to put Esteban Ocon in the car as Hamilton struggled to fight his illness. In the end, with the help of two Ferrari car problems, Hamilton qualified on pole.
But his Sunday didn't turn out well. Hamilton ran wide and across the gravel in the wet conditions. He lost his front wing and the subsequent pit stop and penalty cost him a chance of a decent point finish. But still, Wolff admired his driver.
"Lewis wasn't healthy the whole weekend, but I think he did the most he could to get himself in an OK place for the race. Many of us wouldn't have considered being in the car but he did. You can't physically be at your best when you've been ill for a few days. Having said that he tried to push through and that needs to be admired," Wolff told the Independent.
