Wolff: Should Bottas lose seat "we won't do anything that complicates his career"
After a splendid start to the 2019 Formula season, Valtteri Bottas looked likely to pick up another contract at Mercedes. However, over recent weeks the Finn has tailed off just as the contracts will be decided. But Toto Wolff says if Bottas loses his seat, Mercedes will make sure he gets the best possible outcome.
Bottas picked up just four points over the last two weekends. In Germany, he crashed out of the race in tricky conditions and a week later collided with Charles Leclerc in the opening exchanges of the Hungarian Grand Prix. With the question marks getting bigger heading into the summer break, Wolff says whatever happens Mercedes will ensure things end up well for their drivers.
"We are responsible for both the juniors and those who drive our car now. We will not do anything that complicates their future career," Wolff said after the Hungarian Grand Prix when asked about the situation with Bottas and Esteban Ocon.
"Whatever we decide, we will take into account the possibilities of a driver to go somewhere else. Whether that is for Esteban who want to make progress somewhere else or for Valtteri who can make a 'soft landing' somewhere. He deserves that, he showed yesterday [during qualifying when he beat Lewis Hamilton] again that he has great speed."
