Christian Horner has kept the door open for Pierre Gasly at Red Bull
Red Bull Racing have had a strong season but would have liked to have been higher up the constructor's standings. Having swapped Pierre Gasly and Alex Albon halfway through the season, Christian Horner believes that both drivers have shown their talent and it is not impossible for Gasly to return to the top team.
"We have the luxury of resorting to a driver pool," Horner said to Auto-Motor-und-Sport when asked about the reason they swapped drivers. "Alex got stronger with each race in the first half of the season. It's his rookie year. Pierre, on the other hand, lost more and more confidence. He was outscored twice by his teammate. The distances became bigger and bigger.
"You just had to look at his body language. He has continued to pull his shoulders. We had to act and regain self-confidence. In the end, we had double benefits. We were able to try Alex with us and have Pierre raised again at Toro Rosso."
Since returning to Toro Rosso, Gasly has put in a number of impressive performances including a podium finish last time out in Brazil. Horner has kept the door open for a potential return to the top team for the Frenchman.
"Of course. If that were not the case, we would have sorted it out right away. But he got a new contract for 2020 and thus the chance to recommend himself again for Red Bull."
Red Bull will hope to continue to build on their solid season and be genuine contenders for the championship in 2020.
