Verstappen and Hamilton both enthusiastic about a potential Alonso F1 return
This time last year, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix was all about celebrating Fernando Alonso's career within Formula 1. The Spaniard is back in Abu Dhabi this weekend and explained to Sky Sports how he's interested in rejoining the sport for the 2021 F1 season. Front runners Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen were enthusiastic about a return to F1 for the two-time world champion.
Hamilton thought the ordeal would be fine, but questions whether they'll be room for Alonso on the grid with so many future stars coming through the ranks. "There are only twenty seats and many young lads coming," the six-time world champion said in the press conference.
Verstappen would like to see Alonso get placed into a competitive car. “Absolutely, Fernando is a great driver. But I think it only makes sense if he gets stuck in a competitive car. Otherwise, it is a waste of time for him. But he probably knows that himself!"
The 2020 Formula 1 grid is complete after Williams confirmed their line-up for next year in the build-up to the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. But next year's silly season will be more extreme as plenty of drivers run-out of contract.
