Fernando Alonso's F1 return "will be on the table"
Fernando Alonso might be out in Saudi Arabia competing in the Dakar Rally but that hasn't stopped him turning the motorsport rumour mill. The two-time F1 World Champion has revealed there is potential for him to return to the sport in 2021.
Alonso left the pinnacle of motorsport in 2018, leaving his McLaren F1 seat to pursue other opportunities including the Triple Crown of motorsport. The Spaniard has won the Monaco Grand Prix and the 24 hour Le Mans, leaving just the Indy 500 to complete the set.
Alonso was regularly around the F1 paddock with McLaren in 2019 but was unable to secure a seat, despite being regularly rumoured to potential drives. Alonso has got the rumour mill turning once again revealing a return in the 2021 season will be an option.
"That would mean a lot to me because it would be motorsport history," Alonso told the German news agency SID on completing the Triple Crown.
On a potential F1 return Alonso added: "My love for Formula 1 will always be there."
He said that after the Indy 500 a return to the pinnacle of motorsport "will be on the table".
