Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes Formula 1 team have been nominated for the Laureus World Sports Awards after another successful year that saw the Briton claim a sixth World Championship and the Silver Arrows a sixth constructors title in a row.

Despite the success Hamilton has had of recent times he is yet to receive a Laureus Sports Award, with Michael Schumacher being the last F1 driver to win it back in 2004.

He joins the list of nominees including Tiger Woods, Lionel Messi, Rafael Nadal, Marc Marquez and Eliud Kipchoge.

While Mercedes themselves claimed the award in 2017, with Brawn F1 team the last to pick it up in 2010 after their 2009 season, are nominated against the likes of Liverpool FC, Toronto Raptors basketball team, USA Women’s football team, Spain Men’s basketball team and South Africa men’s rugby union team.

Mika Hakkinen, two-time F1 champion and Laureus Academy Member, praised both, saying (quoted by GPFans): "Lewis continues to dominate Formula One with the excellent Mercedes car he is driving.

“They both deserve their nominations. Whatever changes the sport makes, Lewis and Mercedes always seem to adapt.

"Congratulations to both of them. The big question everyone wants to know now is whether Lewis can pull level with Michael Schumacher on seven world titles next year.

“At the moment you would have to say it seems likely. It will make it an interesting year."

German driver Sofia Floersch is also nominated for comeback of the year after her heavy crash in Macau in 2018 saw a return to the sport a year later.
