"Even when the safety car is out, Mercedes is always leading..."
The safety car will once again be a Mercedes. For the 25th consecutive season, the German car will be leading the Formula 1 field under Safety Car conditions. An anniversary that they take a moment to think about at Mercedes.
As soon as someone crashed on track, the stewards and race directors start to think whether a safety car or virtual safety car is required. More often than not, when an incident is serious, or there's debris on the track, then the safety car will come out. An exciting side effect is that the field will slide back together, resulting in a restart. If the safety car has to turn out often, we usually have to deal with a spectacular race.
This year it will be the 25th time that the safety car will be delivered by Mercedes. On their social media, they reflect on this moment in a funny way: "Even when the safety car is outside, a Mercedes is in the lead"
Bernd Maylander has been the driver of the Saftey Car for years and is the only driver outside the Formula 1 field who also has to wear a race overall while not competing for points. The German has been a driver of the car since 2000. The current model for the safety car is the Mercedes-AMG GT R
In 2019, the safety car was called upon numerous times. In Bahrain, the race finished under the safety car for only the eighth time in history.
