BREAKING: Ferrari unveil Vettel and Leclerc's 2020 challenger!
- Nicolás Quarles van Ufford
Ferrari have unveiled their challenger for 2020, the SF1000, with Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc both in attendance as the Italian works team look to win their first championship since 2008 in the upcoming season.
Leclerc and Vettel won three races between them in 2019 and grabbed nine pole positions to go with it as they finished second in the constructors' championship. The Red Bull of Max Verstappen did however pip Ferrari to third place in the drivers' championship in what ultimately was a disappointing year for the Scuderia.
This was despite all the hype the team received before the season, looking like the favourites after winter testing in Barcelona. While their straight-line speed remained the best on the grid for the duration of the season, it was again Mercedes who were utterly dominant, winning 15 of the 21 Grands Prix as Lewis Hamilton ran away with the title yet again.
The wait continues
Since their constructors' title in 2008, the trophy cabinet in Maranello has been empty. Fernando Alonso has come very close in 2010 and 2012 but Ferrari has never really been close to a trophy since.
Things have gotten better in the second half of last decade, with Mattia Binotto being appointed as technical chief first and as team principal after. Vettel led the championship in 2018 until the latter half of the season, when his season fell apart, although Ferrari have regressed slightly again in 2019. One bright spot in the year, however, was when Leclerc took the Italian Grand Prix at Monza in front of hundreds of thousands of Tifosi.
