The growing influence of social media on F1 drivers
Ever since Liberty Media bought Formula One, the rules on social media have been relaxed and drivers are now able to express themselves more. With the new generation more social media savvy, we look at what influence social media has had on drivers and fans alike.
One name that comes to mind is McLaren's meme king Lando Norris, whose child-like demeanor has added some well-needed personality to a grid with plenty of seasoned professionals. Norris proved he was a hit on track as much as he was online, with his regular live-streams with Red Bull's Max Verstappen on rFactor2 a welcome bit of content when the racing is not on.
Daniel Ricciardo is one of the funniest drivers on the current F1 grid, his positive personality is contagious, with a compilation of his team radios enough to make you laugh for hours on end. His use of Instagram to show off his adventures on his bikes and buggies gives fans an insight into just what drivers do in their spare time.
Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton uses Instagram and Snapchat mainly to show off his fashion collaboration with Tommy Hilfiger and his numerous workouts, as well as sending love to #TeamLH around the world. Even Kimi Raikonnen has started to use social media to the shock of the world.
Sebastian Vettel does not use social media, potentially the only driver on the grid not to do so.
