It's been rumoured for a while already, but the Dutch broadcaster RTL Nieuws has just confirmed that the 2020 Olympics will be rescheduled for a year. That was decided on Tuesday by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in consultation with the Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

The 2020 Olympic Games were to be held in Japan and were scheduled for the end of July. Of course, the end of July is still far away, but due to the lockdowns in several countries, it is currently impossible for athletes to prepare for the games. In addition, preparatory games have all been cancelled.

Coronavirus has great influence

It was already hanging in the air a bit longer, because the Canadian sports federation had already withdrawn its own athletes for the games. And on Monday, IOC member Dick Pound already announced that the Games could be postponed for a year.

After the European Football Championship, another huge event has disappeared from the agenda. Now the Olympic Games are rescheduled to 202, it remains to be seen what effect this will have on the 2020 Formula 1 season. Can the sport still take place in 2020 and if so, when will it start? Ross Brawn confirmed that the FOM is aiming for 15 till 18 races this year.
