After a disappointing 2019, Guenter Steiner is confident that Haas F1 will be able to compete for fourth and fifth place in the constructors' championship. It's going to be exciting, he suspects. The differences would have been minimal during the winter tests at the circuit of Barcelona.

When asked where Haas F1 will be when the Formula 1 season starts, Steiner answers: "Somewhere in the midfield, although it's hard to say where exactly that will be", the team boss of the American race stable starts talking to Auto, Motor und Sport. The differences are very small, according to data collected in Spain. "It seems that four or five teams are within three tenths".

What exactly the batting order is in midfield is impossible to say just on the basis of the winter tests, emphasizes the Italian. "Three tenths is ten kilos of fuel more or less in the tank in Barcelona. And you never know exactly how much fuel the other teams have used. You only know exactly how much fuel you used yourself. But I think we're doing well in midfield."

Racing Point has a lead in midfield

So which teams don't belong to that group of four or five teams? Are they Alfa Romeo and Williams? "In a way, yes. I think Racing Point might have a small lead, but McLaren, Renault, Alpha Tauri and we don't admit much to each other", says Steiner, who hopes that the problems of 2019 are definitely over. "You can never be sure unless you start racing. But that won't happen in the next two months. We are optimistic, but we can't be one hundred percent sure that we have solved the problems," he says.
