Seidl goes against Red Bull: ''Different bugetcaps not necessary at all''
- GPblog.com
The coronavirus shuts down the entire Formula 1 and that could be important for the future of the sport, thinks Andreas Seidl. The team boss of McLaren already sees this virus as an important wake-up call for the sport.
Seidl preys on $100 million
''This crisis is a last wake-up call for the sport, where once again it has become clear that we as a sport are not sustainable at all. We have reached a point where drastic measures are needed and the first simple step is a new budget cap. That is now the most important thing, to prevent greater damage'', Seidl says in a video conference with Motorsport.com and others.
''We want the budget cap to be as low as possible and aim for 100 million dollars. Everyone sees the need now that we are in the crisis, but we have to make decisions now and not only think of our own interests. It's about the whole sport and not just one team.'' In doing so, Seidl completely ignores Horner's earlier remarks that a budget cap should be different for the different teams.
Which cap will there be
Thursday afternoon there will be a new meeting between the teams and then a decision has to be made about a new cap. ''With a budget cap of 100 million dollars the fastest car and the fastest team still wins. A double budget cap is therefore not necessary, because within the fictitious value of parts, the existing cap is already included. I don't think that's necessary at all''.
So the question is who will draw the longest end during this meeting. McLaren and many of the smaller teams want a low budget cap in order to reduce costs, but top teams, especially Ferrari and Red Bull Racing, demand a budget cap that is different for each team, because one team is also part of smaller teams.
