Alonso: 'Sainz has proved himself against Verstappen and Hulkenberg'

The 'silly season' for the 2021 drivers' market is just as quiet as the races themselves. This is because Sebastian Vettel has not yet decided if he will stay at Ferrari. The second seat next to Charles Leclerc is coveted and many drivers in midfield are waiting for news.
One of them is Carlos Sainz. The Spaniard has done a fantastic job last year and seems to be enjoying himself with McLaren. Yet he is named as the best candidate to replace Vettel. The German could then take his place at McLaren.
Ferrari has indicated that they would like to continue with Vettel, but should he in turn decide otherwise, Sainz would be a worthy successor. At least that's what compatriot and good friend Fernando Alonso thinks. According to the man from Oviedo, Sainz has proven himself against the best drivers in Formula 1.
Sainz has proven himself against Verstappen and Hulkenberg.
"Carlos is doing great, and not just last year. He's been doing great since Toro Rosso. He had Verstappen as a partner from the beginning and then Hulkenberg. He's always had hard competitors beside him and he's done well. That's good for Spain and for the sport. I hope he has a good future," said the two-time world champion on one of the official Formula 1 channels.
According to Alonso Sainz has fought hard against Verstappen and Hulkenberg. It has to be added that he didn't beat either of them on points. Against both drivers he drove about one and a quarter season. Compared to Verstappen he was 40 points short and compared to Hulkenberg nineteen points.
