''Without the lower budget cap, we would have had fewer manufacturers''

Ross Brawn, Chase Carey and the Liberty Media team have done their utmost to get the budget cap in Formula 1. A cap that, according to Brawn, has enabled us to start with ten teams in 2020.
As of 2021 there will be a budget cap of 145 million dollars in Formula 1. The cap was initially set at $175 million, but the coronavirus removed $30 million from the cap. An important victory for the sport, which according to Brawn otherwise would have lost teams in the coming seasons.
A lower budget cap
''Before the coronavirus broke out, we already told each other that in a crisis situation, we need to adjust the cap further downwards. Everyone agreed then and that's a good thing, because without this cap we wouldn't have had the number of manufacturers and large teams. Now we got the chance to explain this to the management and look at the future of Formula 1 at a lower cost," says Brawn at Motorsport.com.
Not only has the budget cap saved smaller teams and manufacturers, but it is probably also the salvation of the sport. For years the costs only increased, with the big risks as a result. The corona crisis has caused the teams to come to terms with the fact that the sport can live on in a healthier way and who knows, also become a lot more competitive.
