According to reigning world champion Lewis Hamilton, Formula 1 has to return to Africa for a Grand Prix. He calls it 'the most important place' for the championship. The last time there was a race in Africa was in South Africa in 1993.
Return
South Africa and Morocco are often linked to a return on the F1 calendar. Formula E comes to Morocco almost every year for the E-Prix and the Kyalami in South Africa has had several upgrades in recent years. Liberty Media also wants to expand the calendar.
In a video from Petronas where fans could ask questions to Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas. When asked where F1 had to go for a new race, Hamilton was quick to answer: "Easy, Africa. It’s such an important place to go back."
F1 should help communities
“At the moment Formula 1 goes to countries and doesn’t really leave much behind, if anything. F1 has to shift to being a sport that does go to places and leaves behind something that can really help the communities", continues the Mercedes driver.
"It needs to be held where it’s not all about money. It’s about the people. In business, that’s not always the case. That’s something I’m really pushing for", ends Hamilton.
