Hamilton respects those who didn't take a knee ahead of Austrian Grand Prix
Prior to the start of the Austrian Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton got down on one knee with the other Formula 1 drivers as a symbol against racism. Some drivers didn't participate and Hamilton now says he respects their choice.
Hamilton strikes back
On Sunday there was a story circulating that Hamilton would ask everyone to get down on their knees. He is happy with the people who supported him, but he also respects the others who didn't get down on one knee.
“Honestly I don’t know everyone’s different reasons or opinions. I am aware of some opinions from some of the drivers but that’s more a private thing and I wouldn’t like to share. But I think ultimately nobody should be forced to into a scenario where they have to kneel," Hamilton told RaceFans.net.
Verstappen remains standing
Hamilton has no problem with those drivers who didn't get down on one knee. "There were a few who said they didn't want to do it and I let everyone say what they want. I told those boys that I do, but they should do what feels good to them," said Hamilton added. Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen were amongst the six who stood during this part of the weekend. A few of the drivers announced on social media ahead of the event, explaining why they weren't going to kneel.
“I’m really, really grateful for those who did kneel along with me. I think it’s still a really powerful message. But ultimately whether you kneel or do not kneel, that’s not going to change the world. It’s a much, much bigger issue across the world than just something as little as that. But for me, personally, I think everyone had a right to their own personal choice and for me personally, that was what I felt was right to do. But I didn’t make the decision until last night.” concludes Hamilton.
