Renault announced last week that Fernando Alonso will drive for their Formula 1 team in 2021. His arrival seemed almost inevitable, but the team did talk to other drivers while they were negotiating a comeback for the Spaniard.

"Fernando was one of the three top drivers we talked to - Sebastian (Vettel) and Valtteri too", Alain Prost is quoted by Reuters. Bottas found it difficult to leave Mercedes for understandable reasons and Prost had reservations with Sebastian Vettel.

"We didn't know exactly what Sebastian's motivation was... but Fernando has always shown his motivation to come back to the team. What happened to Fernando on several teams was my biggest problem and question mark".

Prost doesn't feel like arguing

Prost refers to the stories that Alonso caused problems behind the scenes at both Ferrari and McLaren and finally left Ferrari with a quarrel. This is something Prost wants to avoid and therefore already made it clear to the Spaniard that 2021 is going to be a difficult season.

"I have spoken about this many times with Fernando. I really trust that he will have a different philosophy. Two years outside Formula 1 might not have been bad for him, in my opinion, to have a different feeling, a different view".
