Szafnauer stands up for Perez: "I don't think he's done anything wrong."
Sergio Perez tested positive on COVID-19 on Thursday and will probably have to miss several race weekends. It's a big line through the account of the Mexican and something for which he is condemned by some.
This was fuelled by rumors that he had been on holiday and did not abide by the rules established by the FIA and Formula 1. His team boss at Racing Point, Otmar Szafnauer, comes up against Motorsport.com for Perez, among others, and says that his driver has done nothing wrong in his eyes.
Flown by private plane
"I don't think Checo did anything wrong by going back to his family. He took all safety precautions. I don't think it's very different from Ferrari returning to Italy, for example. There is nowhere in his contract that he needs permission to visit his family".
That his family is in Mexico makes sense, of course, adds Szafnauer. He emphasizes that Perez only flew private planes and stayed in his bubble there as well. The team will now keep an eye on him every day to make sure the virus is out of his body as soon as possible.
