Hamilton after crazy end: "I was strangely relaxed in the last lap"
Lewis Hamilton has once again won the British Grand Prix. The Mercedes driver had few problems until things suddenly turned into a disaster on the last lap.
"Until that last lap, everything went very smoothly. The tyres felt great. Valtteri was pushing a lot and I tried to keep my tyres in one piece, but I don't think Valtteri was pushing at all. When I heard he was having problems, I looked at my tyres and everything seemed fine, the car was still driving well. On the straight, the air suddenly went out. I had my heart in my throat. I didn't know if the tyre had hit my brakes. I had to drive that lap and make sure I wouldn't lose my wing or be too slow. Luckily we just made it. Maybe we should have stopped sooner!" Hamilton said.
Relax to the end
"You might be surprised, but I was very relaxed at the end. Bono was giving me all the information, I think the gap was 30 seconds and dropped fast. In my head, I was thinking about how long it would take to reach the finish line. Towards the end, it was just very difficult and I heard that the gap was getting smaller and smaller. Then I went full throttle in turns 15 and 16 and could barely stop the car. My heart almost stopped," the world champion concluded.
