Verstappen about Imola: "I think only one free practice is a bit stupid"
- GPblog.com
Last week it was announced that Formula 1 will test with a new format in Imola. There will only be one test session, after which the drivers will qualify immediately. Max Verstappen doesn't think that a two day GP weekend will yield much and because Imola is a new circuit for many F1 drivers, it won't be positive either.
"It's a circuit we don't know," explains Verstappen at the press conference, in front of RaceFans.net. Verstappen prefers to see two free practice sessions, so that teams and drivers can make changes to the car before they qualify for the race. "Then give us two one-hour free practice sessions instead of a single one-and-a-half hour session."
Stupid decision
Verstappen is not against a two-day event, but prefers to see the two days differently. "With two test sessions we can still make sure everything works perfectly and solve possible problems". The Red Bull driver is happy that the F1 circus has returned to the legendary circuit. "I'm really looking forward to returning to Imola. I just think it's wrong what they've done, it's a great track".
"Of course it's the same for everyone, so I don't have a big problem with it. However, you do go to a new circuit and you only have one practice session. They just have to give us two sessions to solve all the problems". The Dutchman from Red Bull Racing does not agree with the current format of the FIA. "I think it's a bit stupid ," said Verstappen.
